Ethernet APL paves the way to modern process automation

Digitalisation of the process industry

Ethernet APL (Advanced Physical Layer) brings digitalisation to every last corner of every plant, thus revolutionising the process industry. This pioneering technology combines the advantages of Ethernet with the special requirements of process automation – paving the way for Industry 4.0 and IIoT applications.

The main components of Ethernet APL:

  • APL field devices: Sensors and actuators with Ethernet APL
  • APL switches: Connect field devices to each other and enable efficient data communication
  • Fieldbus cables: Standardised cables in accordance with IEC 61158-2, which both transmit data and supply the sensors with power

Simple integration

Ethernet APL can be integrated directly into existing systems, as it is compatible with industrial Ethernet protocols such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. It can therefore also be used wherever 4 ... 20 mA/HART and Fieldbus technologies have previously been used. This saves extensive retrofitting.  Integrated web servers, OPC-UA and local interfaces offer security through comprehensive maintenance and diagnostics options.

Practical implementation
  • New facilities: Introducing Ethernet APL into greenfield projects is simple and convenient.
  • Existing facilities: The gradual changeover via replacement of remote IOs and field barriers step by step facilitates integration and minimises operational interruptions.
Ethernet APL is the answer to multiple challenges posed by the process industry:
  • Secure data transmission in harsh environments – even in Ex-hazardous areas
  • Data transmission over long distances of up to 1000 metres
  • Increased data transmission speeds (10 Mbit/s)
  • Simple installation and lower costs thanks to two-wire cable connection and simultaneous power supply to multiple devices

The new technology thus enables the integration of high-speed data communication with existing field devices, ensuring more efficient and accurate data acquisition and control.

Ethernet APL advantages at a glance

System availability

Modern field instruments record valuable additional information. Ethernet APL enables real-time use of the information for central monitoring and early detection of maintenance needs. This avoids unplanned downtime and increases system availability.

Flexibility

Based on established IEEE and IEC standards, Ethernet APL enables globally certifiable communication. This means that devices from different manufacturers can communicate and work together without any problems.

Efficiency

Ethernet APL connects field devices directly to higher-level systems and creates a standardised communication infrastructure across all levels – with a data transmission speed of 10 Mbit/s, it is around 300 times faster than HART or Fieldbus.

Plant modernisation

Ethernet APL supports the proven trunk-and-spur technology and is compatible with industrial Ethernet protocols such as EtherNet/IP, HART-IP and PROFINET. This facilitates integration, as existing concepts and infrastructures can still be utilised.

Future prospects

Ethernet APL is considered a flexible and robust solution for the demanding requirements of the process industry and has proven its market readiness, not least in large-scale tests. In realistic scenarios with many field devices and numerous field switches, the technology has delivered an impressive performance with its stability and effectiveness. Ethernet APL also works reliably in large processing facilities and offers high data transfer rates.

For the process industry, Ethernet APL represents a significant step forward in terms of digitalisation and networking, as the new technology enables considerably more efficient, reliable and sophisticated automation and data management solutions than ever before. An important step towards smarter and more responsive industrial operations in line with the goals of Industry 4.0.
